John Carl Sossamon, Jr.

John Carl Sossamon, Jr., 93, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, leaving this world of sorrow and grief to go be with his Lord in a place he longed for.

A celebration of his life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2018, in the chapel of Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant with his nephew, the Rev. Frank Sossamon, officiating. The Sossamon family will receive friends beginning at noon. Burial will follow in West Concord Cemetery.

John was born May 11, 1924, in Cabarrus County to John Carl Sossamon, Sr. and Blanche Barringer Sossamon. He was predeceased by his parents and his four brothers, Melvin, Leonard, Gilbert and Donald, and his wife of 64 years, Lillian Newsome Sossamon, who died in 2010.

He attended Mt. Pleasant High School and retired from Cannon Mills with more than 40 years of service. Thereafter, he ran Sossamon’s Painting Service. However, he would tell you his most important work was the ministry, a calling in which his beloved Lillian was a partner. They shared many days in revivals and camp meetings, and through the years they organized three churches. They were charter members of their home church, Mt. Pleasant Church of God, where John served as treasurer, secretary, choir director and Sunday school teacher.  Many will remember he greeted all he met with, “It’s good to be alive and well” sometimes in song and sometimes preceded by “Praise the Lord”.  

Survivors include one daughter, Phoebe S. Talley, and husband, Kevin; a sister, Ann McDougall, and husband, Duane; one granddaughter, Stacy T. Willis, and husband, Brad; one grandson, Joseph Talley; and one great-grandchild, Emily.
