Alvin Ray Hurlocker, 69, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, at his residence following a period of declining health. A celebration of Alvin's life will begin at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, at Cold Springs United Methodist Church, 2550 Cold Springs Road, Concord, with the the Rev. Mary Hatley and Rev. Tony Bell officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home of Tim Hurlocker, Brackenberry Dr., Mt. Pleasant. A native of Cabarrus County, Alvin was the son of Bruner Ray Hurlocker and Ida Mae Drye Hurlocker. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Meredith Hurlocker and his sister, Rebecca H. Barnhardt. A 1964 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Alvin worked for Cannon Mills, owned Hurlocker's Cabinet Shop and retired as maintenance mechanic from Jackson Training School. He served his country as a lance corporal in the U.S. Marines Corps from 1963 to 1971 and was a member of the American Legion. From 1967 to 2004 he was an active member of the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department. Reared in Bethel (Bear Creek) United Church of Christ, as an adult Alvin was a long-time active member of Cold Springs United Methodist Church. His service included being a leader for the annual October BBQ, the community breakfast team, Men's Fellowship, and Boy Scout Troop 5. In addition, he was an MYF counselor, a member of the choir and the Men's Ensemble, participated numerous mission trips and served on the church's administrative board. For 30 years Alvin was an official for football including Pop Warner, middle school, JV, varsity and semi-professional football leagues. He was a collector of arrowheads and especially enjoyed hunting with his grandsons. He was named Cabarrus County Grandfather of the Year in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Barnhardt Hurlocker of the home; two sons, Tim Hurlocker (Sandra) and David Hurlocker; a daughter, Brenda H. Feathers (Bill); eight grandchildren, Nichole Cook (Josh), Kelby Hurlocker, Meredith Spradley (Jarin), Chelsey Hurlocker, Garrett Hurlocker, Andrew Stewart, Anthony Stewart and Conner Hurlocker. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alvin's memory may be made to Boy Scout Troop 5, Cold Springs UMC, 2550 Cold Springs Road, Concord, NC, 28025.
