David Protheroe

David Craig Protheroe 58 passed away at his home on September 9, 2014. For the last 5 years David worked for Professional Property Services as a Senior Real Estate Acquisition/Relocation Agent/NC Real Estate Broker/SC Sales Licensee managing hundreds of properties across North and South Carolina. He worked alongside his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Erin. Previously David worked as a master stone mason as owner of Protheroe & Company Stone Masonry. In later years, he was joined by his son, Paul. David's more than 30 years as a stone mason will be remembered for the hundreds of projects he completed, including subdivision entry walls, fireplaces, patios, walkways, and home and church exteriors across North Carolina. His beautiful handiwork can be seen in the NC State-funded historical restoration of the Engine House foundation at Reed Gold Mine which is the site of the first gold found in the U.S. in Concord, NC. David started the project and he and his son, Paul finished it together. "They both share a passion for working with natural stone and creating something that will last for hundreds of years." You can also visit the stone waterfall at Rocky River Vineyards in Midland, NC where his daughter Anna was married. He was also selected to do the restoration of the Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC returning the church to its original 1915 beauty. His eye for design in stone is evidence of his creativity, attention to detail, and quality of workmanship he applied to all of his work endeavors. Chief among his avocations were the devotion to his wife, Nancy, tenderness as a father to his children Paul, Anna and Erin, delight in his grandchildren David Thomas Cummings and Elsie Mae Jackson and love of siblings, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was an engaged and loving family man, always available and attentive to their needs. He was head and shoulders taller than most, with a hearty laugh, infectious smile, and quiet confidence. To have known him was a privilege. David is survived by his wife, Nancy Long Protheroe, son, Paul Protheroe (Melissa), daughter, Anna Protheroe Jackson (Albert) and their daughter, Elsie, daughter, Erin Protheroe (Joey Cummings) and their son David Thomas, brother, Michael Protheroe and his son Adam Protheroe (Sarah), sister, Nancy Pierce and her son, Ian Pierce, and daughter, Stephanie Pierce, Uncle Raymond Orsene, Aunt Barbara Protheroe and many cousins. David was preceded in death by his beloved parents John Woodruff Protheroe and Ruth Havens Protheroe. Their steadfast love, honor and integrity were his examples. He was preceded in death by Aunt Billie Havens Orsene, Aunt Louise Havens Voss, Uncle Dave Protheroe (Pat), Uncle Don Protheroe, and Aunt Irma Protheroe Perry (Howard & son Jeb).
