Elsie Norma Hughes

Elsie Norma Stockwell Hughes, passed away on November 4, 2026, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was born on July 21, 1937, in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Elsie will be remembered as a strong-willed woman who always did things her way. She lived with independence and determination, qualities that shaped the way she moved through the world and the way she was known by those around her. She found great joy in horses and spent as much time as possible caring for and riding them in special places across the country. She also loved the companionship of a dog, valuing the steady comfort and friendship that came with having one by her side.

She was also an accomplished artist who created many beautiful paintings over the years. Her artistic work reflected her eye for beauty and her dedication to expressing it, and those paintings remain part of the legacy she leaves behind.

Elsie is survived by her friend and caretaker, Lane Barnhardt. She is also lovingly remembered by family members Maureen, Mike, and Karen Barbuto; Rosemary and Russell Mineham; and Diane and Glenn Peterson. She also leaves behind special friends and neighbors Melvin and Wanda Burleyson, David Harrison, and her horse-riding companion Gail Allen, whose friendship and presence were meaningful parts of her life. May all who knew and loved her carry forward warm memories of her strength, her talent, and the joy she found in the things she loved most.

A memorial service will be held on November 14, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant, 8559 Cook St, Mount Pleasant, NC 28124.
