Joyce Smith Tolbert

Joyce Smith Tolbert, 81, of Greensboro, NC passed away suddenly on Tuesday June 30, 2026at Solista Retirement Community in High Point, NC.

Funeral services will be held, 4pm Sunday July 5 at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant, 8559 Cook St., Mt. Pleasant NC 28124, with the Rev. Cliff Wall officiating. The family will receive friends from 3-4 prior to the service. Private family committal will be held at Cold Springs Methodist Church Cemetery.

Joyce was born on November 13, 1944 to Alvis Fetzer Smith and Florence Novella Nolen in Concord, NC. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1963 and was that year’s Tiger Roar editor. Although trained as a medical secretary she chose to work for the Social Security Administration for over 40 years, first in Concord then Greensboro.

A lifelong reader, Joyce always had a book nearby. She loved color and design and had wonderful taste. Her love of flowers was apparent in her garden and home. Responsible, honest and accurate to the penny, we could always rely on Joyce. She will be remembered for providing loving care for both parents and pet tinkerbell until they passed. As well as Linda, a foster daughter, last name lost to us. She could be generous and her younger sister admired her talents.

The family would like to thank Leslie Ross her family for their support and friendship.

She was predeceased by her parents and a sister Mary Ann Smith.

She is survived by a brother, Bruce Smith and his wife Gloria Cline Smith of Concord, NC; sister Brenda S. Morse of Charlotte NC; nephew Dr. Jeffery R. Smith and Husband Robb Fishman of New York, NY; niece Melanie B. Grashot of Madison, AL.
